How Stanley and the Hot Air Balloon was Made.

This is a long story so feel free to make yourself a cup of tea before relaxing into the tale!
Stanley came into being about five years ago. I was visiting my sister in Melbourne and started making this funny little rabbit who was wearing a red and white striped jumper with blue pants. His legs were stumpy and his arms a little short (see the first rabbit on the left) but I liked him straight away and thought to myself, "Now there's a rabbit with dash.  And so, I immediately set to work on the next one (as you do). This chap (2nd from left) was a bit further down the evolutionary line but still wasn't quite there. For one thing, his paws were plunged slightly too far down his pants, giving him a 'Harry high pants' air. His legs were a too straight and with those colours, looked as though he could work in fast food outlet.
The middle rabbit was where it all began to come together - the colours were right, the posture pretty good and the proportions almost there. Just some tweaking with the stuffing and lengthening of legs meant the Stanley we know and love peered out!
Hugo was four at the time of all of this rabbitty crochet and going through a very similar stage to Stanley (you will have to read the book to discover just what that is...). Ideas began to form for a story, but it wasn't until Hugo began school the following year that I had the time to sit down and write it out. Then it flowed. Wherever I was, I would have to run to the kitchen table whenever a line, thought or word popped into my head. I think the boys probably thought I was a completely mad as I was constantly muttering the verses under my breath. And just like Stanley himself, the story slowly evolved over time, at least two years were spent polishing it until a friend forced me to put it aside lest it become thread bare. I have to say, that was an extremely difficult thing to do... important though as it allowed me concentrate on building sets.
Another day I will show you how the sets came to be but that is an even longer story - very crafty too, so shouldn't be rushed. For the time being, I will just give you a couple of behind the scene photos to look at.
Awwww - sleeping Stanley and his little teddy rabbit.... sadly the ric-rac didn't stay as it interfered with a couple of the scenes.
The photography stage was my favourite part - I've always had such joy from taking photos and capturing Stanley and his adventures was so much fun - he is so photogenic but once again, I will save this for another day as there is so much to write about with it.
Then came the pattern writing part. Thankfully, I already had lots of practise from writing up various tutorials for the blog and the added bonus of writing patterns for magazines. That part of it was probably the most fast and I was very lucky to have wonderful pattern testers with Rachel, Dominique and another lovely friend. Their contribution cannot be underestimated as it is sooooooo important that the patterns not only work, but make sense.
Next came a whole new skill set. Learning how to use Photoshop. This was a great challenge and saw me reading through huge manuals as though they were thrillers and spending hours watching youtube clips. The boys were fascinated by this stage and often peered over my shoulder as I explained the ins and outs of what was going on. I have to admit that they were only allowed to watch if they weren't eating... do you find it a little off-putting - working on the computer with somebody crunching an apple in your ear?????
Learning photoshop was a lengthy process but also one of the most valuable skills I have learnt. I use it most days now and usually for good rather than evil.
So this is just the beginning. As I mentioned earlier in the post, over the next few weeks I am going to share with you all sorts of stories from the Stanley book including how I published it AND tutorials that were not featured in the book (starting with the stool above).
I hope you enjoy it and I can't wait to start getting more tutorials up for you!!!!!
Lots and lots of love,
Kate xxooxx.

Stanley and the Hot Air Balloon - On Sale Now!

I don't know how this day came about so suddenly... but, 'Stanley and the Hot Air Balloon' is now waiting to be bought from my shop here. I post all over the world and at this stage, postage is FREE!!! Can you believe it.
If you haven't visited my blog before, let me tell you about Stanley. He is a little rabbit that I made a few years ago. You can imagine how startled I was when he began to talk. Not only that, but when he began to tell me his life story. This book is only the first instalment of his life set on a day when he was supposed to be having a nap but instead, went adventuring in a hot air balloon - you know how it can be with bunnies.
At the back of the book is a special crafting section where you can learn to make all sorts of things from the story like a hot air balloon, or tiny mice, or even.... your very own Stanley!!!
Here are some photos from the book.

Anyway, please feel free to go over and have a look. I will be doing all sorts of exciting things with it this month so please stay tuned.
Lots and lots of love,
Kate xxooxx.

To enter, leave a comment in the section below and I will pick a number (randomly through random.org) on Monday, 5th May. Good luck!

Little Details in the Stanley House.

Here a couple of peeks into Stanley's house. Printing of the book is going well and I will tell you more about it in a couple of days.
Some toys in Stanley's bedroom. I think a horse may be about to lose a leg....
Lots of love,

When Stanley was a Baby....

Here is a photo of Stanley when he came home from hospital.
This is Stanley in the second cot from the right in the middle row. I may be biased but I do think he is the cutest little kit there.
Lots of love,

Stanley is off to the Printers.

I am so sorry for radio silence over the past week (2 weeks?). I have been flat out getting the Stanley book to the printers... it all begins tomorrow!
I thought you might like to see some photos of the sets that I used for the story. Over the next week or two, I will show you lots of behind the scenes work. For the moment, here is the sitting room. It wasn't until I took this photo that I realised Archie had been playing with his  lego hobbit and elves in the house....
Like all good women, Stanley's mother likes to sew. Here is her little nook.
I will let you know when the book is finished and ready to purchase (initially through etsy).
Lots of love,
Kate xxooxx.

The Stanley Book Cover.

I thought you might like to have a sneak preview of the cover of my book which I am currently working on. At the moment it's looking like being 6 weeks out from printing so that is very exciting! So much to be done on it still though....
Thank you so much for all of your comments on Archie's cactus. He was thrilled!
Lots and lots of love,

Books for a Rainy Weekend.

Because I am doing a lot of work on the Stanley project at the moment, book wise I am gravitating towards easy and entertaining reads. Hugo is going through a Paul Jenning's phase (wahoo) and Jonno is busy hanging out with Tony Park in Africa. When Archie is not reading the Skulduggery Pleasant books he has been devouring Jon Mayhew's Mortlock series.
I have just finished Karen White's Tradd Street series (very light, a bit of supernatural and like being on a holiday) and started reading 'The Husband's Secret' by Liane Moriarty which is as unputdownable as a Jodie Picoult. The only things is, it's set in Australia and I am really homesick at the moment so that is kind of intensifying it.  I am so looking forward to 'Lost Lake' by Sarah Addison Allen - I love a bit of magical realism and am beside myself to think that a new Alice Hoffman book is coming out over the next few days. She is up there with Barbara Kingsolver (although entirely different) as two of my all time favourite authors.
I will explain my Lonely Planet book another day.....
Some new craft books and a couple of old friends.
And the cookbook by Matt Preston that my mum received for Christmas - once again, another book that is making me homesick.
And here is the little creature that is keeping my busy and my mind bustling at the moment. Stanley Rabbit himself!
It is rainy here and there are some interesting boxes to be unpacked so I had better scurry along.
Lots and lots of love,
Kate xxooxx.

Working….

School holidays are still powering on but I did manage to get a little bit of work done on the Stanley book when the boys went camping overnight with Jonno. I only had two photos to take and now feel as though the finishing line isn't too far away. It's almost as though I am hanging out with friends whenever I have a scene with Stanley and his mother. They never interrupt me.
I finished reading Wally Lamb's 'We are Water' a couple of days ago. I loved it sooo much that I have to admit the house has fallen onto hard times. And now I have begun Amy Tan's 'The Valley of Amazement' it's looking as though the domestic neglect may become a more permanent situation.
Better go.
Lots and lots of love,
Kate xxooxx.

Setting up a Christmas Scene.

It's all go at our house this morning as it is the time of year when I start getting scenes ready for Christmas cards. Do you like my silver birch forest..... it's made from straws.
Lots of discussion goes into casting. Sadly the rabbits and fox(es?) voted against having John the Bear in the shoot so that was a little awkward.
MAYBE if he didn't keep going off for a quick 'hibernate' they wouldn't have had time to plot behind his back.
MAYBE it's time for me to start getting out a bit more.
Lots of love,
Kate xxooxx.

More Stanley Photos....

I was working on the last of the Stanley photos today (for those of you who are new to these parts, I am in the process of writing an unsolicited children's book - publishers take note...). Here I am showing happy Stanley how to act out his scene.
It's a fraught industry. Look at grumpy Stanley whispering catty gossip into miserable Stanley's ears. Thank goodness Stanley in the photo shoot didn't know what was going on behind the scenes.
Lots of love,
Kate xxooxx.

Washi Tape and Baby Rabbits.

Sooo, today's project.... attaching little legs to little beds for the maternity ward.

Any excuse to use washi tape.
Lots of love,
Kate xxooxx.
p.s. Thank you so much for your books suggestions - I love them and don't be shy to keep the coming....

Building a Rabbit Maternity Ward.

Sooooo, my next project you might ask. Well... a baby bunny maternity ward.
Can you imagine the amount of matches floating free-flow around our house by the time I have finished. Maybe I had better get the boys involved in building mini cabins or something.
I am still having to make little blankets and mattresses for them so they don't get cold. Maybe even the odd beanie. Awwww.... and a teensy, tiny pacifier.... Stop it now!!!
Lots of love,
Kate xxooxx.

Thank You!!!

Thank you so much for all of your kind words and wonderful support! It is such a huge thing to reveal your dreams to people and you guys have made it such a positive step or dare I say leap. So once again, thank you!
Pictured above is Stanley's mother visiting the mouse scene in between photo shoots. She is not actually  in this part of the story but couldn't resist having a gander!
Lots of love,
Kate xxooxx.

Stanley Rabbit.

Okaaaayyyyy. So I am feeling a little bit shy right at this minute as I'm about to tell you what I have been secretly up to over the past couple of years. Making a children's book, a completely unsolicited, no contract guaranteed story. Even Stanley feels nervous about me 'coming out'. See how he is clinging to his mother.
I have crocheted the characters, handmade the sets, written the story and have now reached the photography and editing stage. The house is appalling and I am just managing to meet the family's need for nutrients and clean clothes, but beyond that, every spare minute goes into the world of Stanley.
Did I mention that all of the patterns will be included from Stanley as a baby to little mice, hot air balloons, trees, balloons, bedspreads, cushions and of course Stanley and his mother. It has been such a joy developing all of these patterns and I can't wait to be able to share them all with you in this way.
So hopefully not that much longer and then it will be time to keep my fingers crossed and start looking for a publisher. But in the meantime, I will keep you up to date with how it is all developing.... that is if you would like me to. Gaaaahhhh, I am feeling a little jellyish in the arms now after revealing my inner workings... I had better go and have a cup of tea.
Lots and lots of love,
Kate xxooxx.

The Big Day.

Weeeelllll, today is the big day. My open studio begins tonight and I am suddenly wondering how on earth I am going to finish hiding my mess that is currently strewn around the house. The junk cupboard is already bulging and there is no space left under the bed. Hmmm.
This is one of the cards I will have available for sale tonight. Once again, I can't wait to be able to offer them online next year.
Eeek. Time to stop playing on the computer Kate - start setting up now!!!
Love Kate xxooxx.

Renovations on the Stanley House.

Our boys don't have a dolls house - they have a Stanley house (named after a little crochet bunny I made a while back). It's much more manly for them to have a Stanley house and it means they are always keen to show their friends who likewise enjoy a good Stanley house.
At the moment it is having some cosmetic surgery - this time it's getting a little gritty looking...
Lots and lots of love,
Kate xxooxx.
