A Note From Tauranga....

Just a little note to say that I am still here, but just completely devastated by the Rena disaster off our coast. These beaches are the ones that we are bringing our boys up on, that Jonno was brought up on and one of the reasons we live in this part of the world. The destruction caused by this ship's reefing is unimaginable and the impact on our local ecology and dare I say economy is beyond nightmarish.
It is rare that I become angry, but this is one of those times. A shipping company's accountability is capped at 14 million dollars - and our country, already ravaged financially by the Christchurch earthquake will now have to spend hundreds of millions of dollars to take care of this disaster. I do think, call me crazy, that the countries to which the shipping company pay taxes should also shoulder responsibility.
Sorry, I know this post is out of place on my blog and I promise you beautiful things for tomorrow, just not tonight.

Im really upset about this too. I grew up in Papamoa (and my parents still live there), its just not fair that they can get away with causing such devestation!!!!

it's too awful to believe.
it's going to be a long haul (clean up) but, just like CHCH, all of NZ is behind you...and upset along with you~

Dear Kate,
When I heard of this disaster, I immediately tought of you. I am so sorry for all the negative effects this catastrophe will have to the nature and environment of your beautiful country. I know how much you and your family like to spend your time at the lovely beaches and can just try to imagine how you must feel.
I am sending you a warm hug from the other side of the planet. Love, Ivana.

I happen to agree with you 100 percent. The shipping companies get away with so much. They register in countries that they aren't from and then do horrible things and don't fix it. I am sorry for your country.

You have such good reason to be angry. Beyond upsetting.

My thoughts are with you. I share your anger and upset, although I am on the other side of the world. I do not know how and why we allow this stuff to keep happening. It makes me cry to think about the poor wildlife who suffer because of mans stupidity. Not to mention people like yourself who have to live with the devastation.

I hope the clean up operation is as quick and effective as it is humanly possible to make it. That will be too long; I expect bickering about who pays for it will cause delay. Meanwhile it will be local people on the beaches trying to do the best they can. I wish you well. And yes your blog is a place to share such things. I wish more people would talk about things that matter!

I don't know a lot about the geography of NZ but as my Husband's family came from there and a lot of them still live there I'm learning. I rang him last night (he's in Perth for work and doesn't see the news much) to tell him the stupid boat was leaking all over the Bay of Plenty. He said that was really bad. I had a feeling Tauranga was near there. His Grandad used to live there and fish there. He would have been devastated.

Queensland feels your pain - we had a similar thing a few years back and our boat captain has only just been to court :(

Good luck NZ (just not in the rugby on the weekend ! )
